About this Speaker

Dr. Luella Toni Lewis pursued a career in social justice through medicine. She earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology and a medical doctorate at Georgetown University. In 2004, Dr. Lewis became a family medicine resident. She also became a member of the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR). CIR is the largest physician’s union in the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). With CIR/SEIU, Dr. Lewis helped unions and allies fight for those affected by the failing system. She served the CIR/SEIU in many roles from 2006-2010. These ranged from delegate to national president. 

From 2010 to 2016, Dr. Lewis was Chair of SEIU Healthcare. She also became the International Vice President of SEIU. With SEIU, Dr. Lewis helped to carry out the Affordable Care Act. She also helped to transform global health, youth engagement, racial justice, disaster response, and political strategy. She is now president of the Public Policy and Education Fund of New York. She is also a member of other groups that focus on health and social justice. 

Dr. Lewis has a wide range of tools to pull from for this mission. She founded Liberation Health Strategies. She is also a licensed family physician and geriatrician. She is internationally credentialed in Kemetic Yoga and Femme! Kemetic Yoga is an inclusive and afrocentric practice. It is inspired by ancestral and ancient Egyptian culture. Femme! is a fusion of dance, sensual motion, meditation and celebration. Its purpose is self-care, release, and empowerment.
